Love in the Bamboo Grove premiered at the 51st Hong Kong Arts Festival in 2023 to popular and critical acclaim. In October, the Hong Kong Arts Festival will bring this innovative and well-received production to the Greater Bay Area with stops including Foshan and Zhuhai.
Written by esteemed local playwright and screenwriter Raymond To Kwok-wai who has received a string of prestigious awards, this full-length, two-act Cantonese opera is set in the late Wei and early Jin dynasties and centred around the descendants of the Seven Sages, a group of literati disenchanted with palace intrigue who retreat from society in pursuit of a hedonistic life. Different forms of love are explored in this emotionally charged and action-packed production performed by a dazzling cast.
